Did you know that over 50% of the flowers sold in Australia are imported? According to the Australian Flower Traders Association, this is a common reality for many flower shops across the country. However, at Bathurst Flower Farm Florist, we’re proud to offer an eco-friendly alternative by focusing on locally-grown, sustainable flowers.
What Are Sustainable Flowers?
Sustainable flowers are grown in a way that minimises environmental impact and supports local communities.
Seasonal: Grown during their natural growing season without forcing blooms through artificial means.
Locally Grown: Sold near where they’re grown, reducing transportation-related carbon emissions.
Ethical Practices: We aim to minimise pesticide use by using natural pest deterrents wherever possible, making our flowers a safer and more eco-friendly choice.
Why Shop Locally with Bathurst Flower Farm Florist?
One of the greatest benefits of shopping with us is that we grow some of our own flowers and greenery right here in Bathurst. While we can’t produce every variety required to meet the diverse tastes of our customers, we work closely with local farmers to ensure we get the best quality and freshest blooms available. In fact, some of our flower suppliers are only a 30-minute drive away!
We also source flowers from trusted growers in the mountains and Western Sydney. These farmers understand our commitment to “shopping local,” and if they don’t grow a particular flower, they ensure it comes from the next closest farm, keeping our flower miles to a minimum.
When you buy flowers from us, you’re not only supporting a local business but also helping reduce the use of plastics. Unlike imports that often arrive wrapped in plastic, we prefer to wrap our flowers in eco-friendly paper whenever possible. The only exception is when they’re sold at local IGAs—Trinity Heights and Westpoint IGA—where plastic is necessary to keep the flowers fresh in water.
Fresh From the Field
We believe in offering the freshest flowers possible. When you buy flowers grown by Bathurst Flower Farm Florist, they are picked in the morning and delivered to you that very day, ensuring you receive vibrant, long-lasting blooms. These locally-grown flowers are available from late spring through autumn, and because we’re so focused on using local flowers, we always know exactly where they come from.
The Hidden Cost of Imported Flowers
Imported flowers often come at a hidden environmental cost. Long-distance shipping increases the "flower miles"—the distance flowers travel from where they're grown to where they're sold. This means more fuel consumption, higher carbon emissions, and greater damage to the environment. Supermarket flowers, which are almost always imported, are cheaper because they’re bought in bulk and are often second grade.
A recent ABC Foreign Correspondent story “The Real Cost of a Rose” highlighted the negative impact of imported flowers, from environmental degradation to poor working conditions on overseas farms. This makes supporting local florists like Bathurst Flower Farm Florist even more important, as we’re committed to ethical and sustainable practices.
Supporting Ethical Flower Practices
When you buy from us, you're also supporting fair trade flower practices, where workers receive fair pay and have safe working conditions. We aim to minimise pesticide use by using natural pest deterrents wherever possible, making our flowers a safer and more eco-friendly choice.
Slow Flowers and Sustainability
We are passionate advocates of the Slow Flowers movement, which encourages consumers to buy locally, seasonally, and ethically. This movement aligns with our values of reducing flower miles, supporting local farmers, and offering eco-friendly, sustainable flowers that contribute to a healthier planet.
At Bathurst Flower Farm Florist, we’re proud to lead by example with our commitment to local and sustainable flower sourcing. Whether you're sending flowers for a birthday, anniversary, or just because, you can feel good knowing that you're making an eco-friendly choice with us.
